A Brief Introduction of Permanent Magnets

Permanent magnets possess a distinctive feature wherein they can generate magnetic flux within a magnetic circuit’s airgap without requiring a continuous energy input. This flux density can exhibit uniform or nonuniform patterns and remain steady or undergo changes over time. The applications of magnets can be categorized based on their impact on the magnet itself or by the specific physical effect being utilized. With their versatility and cost-effectiveness, permanent magnets are expanding their usage across various domains and are increasingly replacing electromagnets for multiple purposes.

Today, permanent magnets play a critical role as enabling technologies across diverse sectors including transportation, industry, residential and commercial settings, consumer electronics, defense, IT/PC, wind energy, and medical fields. These magnets are highly valued due to their unique capability of interacting with ferromagnetic materials without physical contact, either through attraction or repulsion. They can also exert force on charged particles or conductors carrying electrical currents. This technological significance makes permanent magnets indispensable in a wide range of applications.

Benefits of Permanent Magnet Motors

Permanent magnet motors have excellent energy conversion efficiencies, typically reaching over 90%, which means less energy is lost during the energy conversion process, thus improving overall energy efficiency. Since PM motors do not require additional current to maintain magnetic flux, they offer better stability and are able to maintain consistent performance under a wide range of operating conditions. They have low inertia and are very fast to start and stop, which contributes to increased productivity and time savings. Compared with traditional motors, PM motors have lighter weight components and smaller total size, which makes it more portable and flexible. The architecture of permanent magnet motors is intricately simplistic, and components lend themselves to facile installation, refurbishment, and substitution. This streamlines the entire maintenance procedure while effectively reducing associated costs. These motors boast substantial energy conservation capabilities; with potential savings standing at an impressive 50% or higher. The primary contributing factors to this phenomenon are their high operational efficiency, robust adaptability, innovative brushless design, and extensive speed adjustment scope.

Owing to these multitudinous benefits, permanent magnet motors enjoy widespread application across a diversity of sectors. They are extensively utilized in industrial automation processes as well as automotive industries besides being integral parts of refrigeration systems and air conditioning units. Furthermore, they play pivotal roles within wind power generation schemes.

Their reach extends beyond just commercial usage – touching upon the realms of aerospace, national defence activities along with enhancing productivity within agricultural domains. They invariably add convenience by powering up a vast array of gadgets used in our daily life thereby bringing a myriad blend of technology and comfort into our homes and workplaces.

What Applications Need Permanent Magnet Motors?

A permanent magnet motor is an electric motor that uses wound armatures and permanent magnets for field excitation. These permanent magnets can be stacked with the armature for an axial flux configuration or fixed, rotating, inside, or outside the armature for radial flux machines.

Permanent magnet motors are versatile and efficient, finding applications across a wide range of industries. They are available in AC and DC versions and can make use of a variety of magnets, such as alnico, ferrite, or rare earth magnets. The choice of magnetic material depends on the specific requirements of the application. Neodymium iron boron magnets, for instance, are suitable for size-sensitive applications like medical and aerospace, while ferrite magnets are commonly used in cost-sensitive applications such as automotive.

Permanent magnet (PM) motors find applications across a broad power range, ranging from milliwatts to hundreds of kilowatts. In recent times, there have been efforts to utilize PMs in even larger motors with a minimum rating of 1 megawatt (MW). Therefore, PM motors have a wide range of utilization across various fields. For instance, they find their place in stepping motors used in wristwatches, industrial drives for machine tools, and even in large PM synchronous motors utilized for ship propulsion in areas such as navy frigates, cruise ships, medium-sized cargo vessels, and icebreakers.

The advantages of PM motors lie in their simple structure, small size, high efficiency, and high power factor. These attributes have contributed to their widespread adoption across different industries. Notably, PM motors have found extensive usage in the metallurgical industry (specifically in ironmaking plants and sintering plants), ceramic industry (such as ball mills), rubber industry (internal mixers), petroleum industry (pumping units), textile industry (spinning frames), as well as other industries requiring medium to low voltage motors.

As a China leading permanent magnet motor supplier, Enneng can make perfect customization for different customers according to different demands.
